I put my thing down, flip it, and reverse it: Engineered Garments Brookline Jacket

Intrigued from the first time I saw it, as soon as I put it on I had one of those “I have to have you” moments. Once I flipped it inside out and put it on again, the deal was done. It was mine. I’m a sucker for great design on a jacket and Engineered Garments never disappoints, but to basically get two EG jackets for the price of one? No brainer. Take my money.

In the Engineered Garments Fall/ Winter collection of 2011, Daiki Suzuki introduced a fully reversible jacket called the Brookline. On one side is a traditional blazer fit in a charcoal striped wool/ nylon blend with 3 pockets and button closure, while the reverse side is a black quilted nylon, 2 pocket jacket using snap button closures. Versatility is the key word when describing the Brookline Jacket. Each side provides a completely unique style creating different looks by just opening or closing a button or even a simple adjustment of the lapel. The charcoal side has three front pockets with a fourth side/back pocket connected on to the front right pocket, while the reverse side sports a utility map style chest pocket and a lower front pocket.

While not exactly pushing the thickness of a full on winter weight coat, this jacket provides more than a substantial amount of warmth for those cold New York commutes. Although the charcoal side is a bit of a boxier fit, it allows for an assortment of layering pieces. I find that the quilted side fits just a tad bit slimmer. The charcoal and black combination match with virtually anything making it one of my most used winter pieces and easily my favorite piece from the Engineered Garments FW11 collection. An interesting note is that the charcoal striped wool/nylon is the same fabric used in the lining of the black FW11 Field Parka and is seen in several other pieces from the FW11 collection.

The Fall/ Winter 2011 Engineered Garments Brookline was offered in a variety of color ways along with the charcoal striped version including a navy version, a black watch tartan version, as well as a grey herringbone with black polka dots. The collection also included a matching reversible Logger Vest as well as a Bucket Hat. The Brookline Jacket was so well received that Daiki continued to produce the design in both the SS12 and FW12 lines incorporating different fabrics and updating a few small details. If you’re in NYC, check out the Nepenthes store. You can purchase the Brookline Jacket online here, here, here or here.
